Whimsical classics
An illustrated poster for The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. The image features several characters: Star-Lord is in the center foreground wearing his mask with glowing red eyes and pointing two blasters forward. Above him are Groot, wrapped in a string of Christmas lights; Rocket Raccoon; Drax, who is holding a star-shaped cookie; and Mantis, who is smiling and holding a red Christmas ornament. The title is written at the bottom in green and red letters, and the entire scene is framed by a glowing white border and festive lights.
The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is the best because it mixes goofy space mayhem with real heart, all powered by an amazing, perfectly weird, instantly classic soundtrack. It turns holiday chaos into pure joy. And Kevin Bacon is awesome.

-Bryan Bloomquist
A movie poster for A Charlie Brown Christmas. The illustration shows Charlie Brown in a winter hat and coat standing next to his small, sparse Christmas tree decorated with a single red ornament. Snoopy, wearing a striped nightcap, looks on from the left. In the background, Snoopy's red doghouse is covered in snow and heavily decorated with multi-colored Christmas lights. The scene is set against a purple night sky filled with white stars.
I find joy in watching this simple kids movie at Christmas!

Here's alt text for this image: "Movie poster for 'Elf' starring Will Ferrell and James Caan. The poster features a man in a bright green elf costume with white fur trim and a large gold belt buckle, wearing yellow tights and black curled-toe shoes, standing with hands on hips in a confident pose. He wears a green and yellow pointed elf hat. The movie title 'elf' appears in large green glittery letters with gold accents, with the man's legs positioned between the 'l' and 'f'. The tagline at the top reads 'THIS HOLIDAY, DISCOVER YOUR INNER ELF' in red text. The release date 'NOVEMBER 7' appears at the bottom along with production credits and the New Line Cinema logo."
There are so many classic and heartfelt Christmas movies and it was a hard choice between Charlie Brown Chritmas and Elf.
But when we want to sit back and laugh and enjoy a Christmas movie, Elf is our go to!!  "The best way to spread holiday cheer is by singing loud for all to hear!"

Family Christmas chaos
The movie poster for National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, starring Chevy Chase. The image depicts Chevy Chase dressed as Santa Claus, hovering in the air above a snowy roof. He appears to be getting electrocuted, with a shocked expression, his hair standing on end, and cartoonish blue lightning bolts radiating from his body. He is tangled in a string of Christmas lights, and several wrapped presents are floating chaotically around him against a dark blue background.
Every year when the holiday season rolls around, there’s one tradition that never fails to bring laughter and nostalgia to my home — watching "National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation".

It’s more than just a movie; it’s a yearly reminder of how humor, chaos, and family come together to make the holidays special.

Here are the alt text descriptions for the two movie posters: **Image 1: *National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation*** The movie poster for the "Special Edition" of *National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation*, starring Chevy Chase. The image features Chevy Chase dressed as Santa Claus, floating above a snowy roof with a chimney. He has a shocked expression, with his hair standing on end, as blue lightning bolts radiate from his body. He is tangled in a string of multi-colored Christmas lights, and several wrapped presents and a red sack of gifts are floating chaotically around him. The poster is set against a dark blue night sky and is enclosed in a red frame decorated with a string of Christmas lights. **Image 2: *A Christmas Story*** The illustrated movie poster for *A Christmas Story*. At the top, a tagline reads: "A Tribute to the Original, Traditional, One-Hundred-Percent, Red-Blooded, Two-Fisted, All-American Christmas...". Below it is a circular illustration of a chaotic family scene in front of a fireplace with a wreath. In the foreground, a young boy with glasses is sitting on a rug, wearing a pink bunny suit. Behind him, a woman on the left holds a cooked turkey, looking distressed, while a man on the right holds up a lamp shaped like a woman's leg in a fishnet stocking. A shouting Santa Claus is in the center background. Below the illustration, the title "A CHRISTMAS STORY" is written in large, red, script font. The bottom of the poster lists the production credits, including "A Bob Clark Film" and starring Melinda Dillon, Darren McGavin, and Peter Billingsley.
Family tradition to have this on repeat all day Christmas Eve.

-Andrew Derse
The movie poster for Home Alone, featuring a dark blue background. The central image shows the young character Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) with a terrified expression, screaming with his mouth open and both hands pressing against his cheeks. Behind him are two window panes; the left pane shows the character Marv with a menacing look, and the right pane shows the character Harry smiling mischievously. The title "HOME ALONE" is displayed at the top in yellow letters, with a small red house icon replacing the letter "e" in "Home". Above the title, text reads "FROM JOHN HUGHES," and below the title is the tagline "A FAMILY COMEDY WITHOUT THE FAMILY".
While "A Christmas Story" has been a long-standing childhood tradition, "Home Alone" has become a shared tradition with my in-laws and husband over the last two decades.

It's a simple, heartwarming reminder of laughter and family, making it a great kickoff to the season — and we can quote just about every line.

Holiday romance
Here's alt text for this image: "Movie poster for 'The Holiday' divided into two sections. The top half shows a dark-haired man in a plaid scarf looking down while smiling, standing next to a blonde woman in a cream turtleneck sweater who is smiling at the camera. The movie title 'the Holiday' appears in large black serif font in the center. The bottom half shows a brunette woman in gray and a dark-haired man in a burgundy shirt facing each other and smiling, appearing to be in conversation in an indoor setting with bookshelves visible in the background."
I always have it playing multiple times when I am putting up Christmas decor or baking cookies!

Here's alt text for this image: "Movie poster for 'Last Holiday' starring Queen Latifah, showing a visual transformation. On the left, she appears in conservative work attire wearing a beige trench coat, black skirt, and sensible shoes while carrying a shoulder bag. On the right, she's glamorously dressed in a flowing red and pink evening gown with her hair styled in elegant waves, striking a confident pose. A billowing red fabric connects the two images, symbolizing the transformation. The title 'LAST HOLIDAY' appears in the center with 'LAST' in bold red letters and 'HOLIDAY' in black, with Queen Latifah's name above."
Such a sweet uplifting and life affirming story and such sweet funny characters. I love this film. It's both serious and hilarious and all about the holiday spirit of joy and love.

-Amy Cullen
Here's alt text for this image: "Movie poster for 'Love Actually' featuring a grid of ten headshots showing the main cast members: Hugh Grant, Liam Neeson, Colin Firth, Laura Linney, Emma Thompson, Alan Rickman, Keira Knightley, Martine McCutcheon, Bill Nighy, and Rowan Atkinson. A large red ribbon and bow runs vertically through the center of the poster with a handwritten gift tag. The title 'love actually' appears at the top in red and black letters, with the tagline 'THE ULTIMATE ROMANTIC COMEDY' at the bottom."
Love it or hate it, it's a classic.

Holiday action heroes
Movie poster for 'Batman Returns' featuring three vertically stacked character portraits against a dark background with blue tones. At the top is Batman in his black cowl and mask. In the middle is Catwoman wearing a black leather mask with cat ears and red lipstick, her clawed hand raised to her face. At the bottom is the Penguin with pale skin, dark hair, and a menacing grin. The cast names appear at the top: Michael Keaton, Danny DeVito, and Michelle Pfeiffer. The movie title 'BATMAN RETURNS' is displayed in white text in the center. At the bottom is a silhouetted crowd scene. The Warner Bros. logo appears in the bottom left corner."
Danny DeVito as the Penguin is what the holidays are all about!

-AJ Jahnig
The movie poster for Die Hard, starring Bruce Willis. The left side shows a tall skyscraper, the Nakatomi Plaza, with its top floors engulfed in a massive explosion and orange fire. A helicopter is visible near the top of the building. The right side of the poster features a close-up, high-contrast image of Bruce Willis’s face looking intense and sweaty. Text on the left reads "40 STORIES OF SHEER ADVENTURE!" and the title "DIE HARD" is written in large red letters at the bottom.
Although the "Die Hard" movies are geared towards action, they are technically Christmas themed.

For some odd reason we end up watching at least one "Die Hard" movie around the Christmas holiday.

Maybe for nostalgia, or to re-watch Hans Gruber's expression as he falls from Nakatomi Plaza. I don't know which.

-Adam Lund
The movie poster for First Blood, starring Sylvester Stallone. A muscular Stallone is the central focus, looking dirty and determined while wearing a tan tank top and a bandolier of ammunition. He is holding a large machine gun. The background shows dark silhouettes of evergreen trees against a dramatic blue and white cloudy sky. The movie title is written in large red block letters at the bottom.
My dad and I (and sometimes a friend or two) would watch this every holiday season. I know it's debatible, but its December setting, Christmas lights and Rambo chosing mercy in the end make it a strong action-as-a-Christmas-movie.

-Lucas Mettling
Holiday redemption and spirit
Movie poster for Frank Capra's 'It's a Wonderful Life' starring James Stewart and Donna Reed. The cover shows a joyful family scene with a man in a gray suit holding a young child on his shoulders while embracing a smiling woman, with two other children looking up at them adoringly. The image is set against a blue starry background with light beams. The movie title appears in elegant gold and white script lettering.
A lovely movie that reminds us to be thankful.

-Jana Olmstead

I've been watching this for many years. For me, its a reminder that we can forget how we touch other peoples lives. And how they touch ours.

-Will Weitzel
Movie poster for 'Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas' starring Jim Carrey. The poster shows a close-up of the Grinch's green, furry face with his characteristic scowl, yellow eyes, and white fur trim from his Santa hat visible. Below is a snowy mountain landscape at night with a glowing village nestled at its base, surrounded by snow-covered pine trees under a starry sky. Jim Carrey's name appears in green text at the top. The movie title is displayed in colorful, whimsical lettering with 'THE GRINCH' in large green letters and 'STOLE CHRISTMAS' in red, along with 'Dr. Seuss' How' above it. Production credits appear at the bottom of the poster."
Alley Green
The Muppet Christmas Carol,' a Walt Disney Pictures and Jim Henson Productions film. The cover shows the Muppet characters floating in a snowy night sky above a Victorian-era street scene. Kermit the Frog dressed as Bob Cratchit is prominently featured in the center, along with Miss Piggy and other Muppet characters. Below them on the cobblestone street is a solitary figure in a long dark coat and top hat carrying a walking stick, representing Ebenezer Scrooge. The scene is set against illuminated shop windows and period architecture with falling snow. The title appears in decorative pink script lettering at the top, with the Disney logo and DVD marker visible on the cover's border.
While I loved this movie as a kid, it's the tradition with my wife of watching this every year with mimosas/champagne just after opening presents that is why I am choosing this instead of the countless other classics.

Now if only Disney+ would bring back the broken hearted ballad they cut.

-Mike Larson
Non-traditional
Movie poster for 'Vacation' starring Ed Helms and Christina Applegate. The poster shows a family of four standing in front of a broken wooden pier or boardwalk against a bright blue sky with clouds. The father stands in the center wearing a black polo shirt with arms crossed confidently, flanked by two sons - one in an orange shirt on the left and one in a green shirt on the right. The mother stands on the right wearing a blue top. The movie title 'VACATION' appears in large red letters at the top. At the bottom, the tagline reads 'WHAT COULD GO WRONG?' The poster has a comedic tone suggesting a family road trip comedy.
We love watching this film on holidays ! It's hilarious. If you like spoilers, search the web for 'Griswold's Springs'. That part of the movie is awesome!

-Jairo Gimenes
Movie poster for 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' starring Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara. The poster features a stark black and white design with two faces in profile - a woman with distinctive spiky black hair, multiple ear piercings, and dark makeup facing left, positioned back-to-back with a man with short hair and stubble facing right. Text at the top reads 'FROM THE INTERNATIONAL BEST-SELLING TRILOGY.' The actors' names appear above the title in white text. The movie title is displayed prominently in large white letters in the center. At the bottom is a moody landscape showing a distant house or estate.
This movie came out right before Christmas. It features plenty of snow (Sweden) and for some reason, my family decided we need to watch it every time we get together for Christmas, at night.

We switch between this verison and the Swedish version pretty equally and love them both. Not for the faint of heart though.

-Vic Valentine
Movie poster for 'Feast of the Seven Fishes' with the tagline 'Tonight we're gonna party like it's 1983' at the top. The poster features an illustrated design in the shape of a Christmas ornament. At the top is a green wreath with red berries and a bow, framing a romantic couple - a man in a red sweater kissing a smiling blonde woman's cheek. Below them is a young woman with wavy blonde hair wearing a festive sweater. The bottom portion shows six older men's faces arranged in a semicircle pattern, displaying various expressions from happy to grumpy. The title 'Feast of the Seven Fishes' appears in large red and green festive lettering at the bottom, along with production credits and studio logos.
Not exactly sure why, but this one resonates with me!
